Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is a private research university in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Established in 1900, the Carnegie Institute of Technology merged with the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research to form the university as a single institution. One of CMU's predecessors was established in 1900 by Andrew Carnegie as the Carnegie Technical Schools. In 1912, the schools became the Carnegie Institute of Technology began granting four-year degrees.
