- A maid, or housemaid or maidservant, is a female domestic worker. In the Victorian era domestic service was the second largest category of employment in England and Wales, after agricultural work. In developed Western nations, full-time maids are now only found in the wealthiest households. In other parts of the world, maids remain common in urban middle-class households. "Maid" in Middle English meant an unmarried woman, especially a young one, or specifically a virgin. These meanings lived on in English until recent times (and are still familiar from literature and folk music), alongside the sense of the word as a type of servant.

Turn my house to a resort, I got robes and maids
I got wives for the nights, and I got hoes for days Kings and their folk, their wives and tender maids
Were all consumed. Now silent are those courts
Ruined the towers, whose old shape slowly fades

Time was, blest Power! when youth and maids
At peep of dawn would rise,
And wander forth, in forest gladesI had a vision of nursery-maids;
Tens of thousands passed by me -
All leading children with wooden spades,Flicker and flutter the lights and shades,
And I see the face of a queen of maidsWho once, these desolate arcades
And time-worn porticoes among,
Disclosed to princely youths and high-born maidsThe day is done; and, lo! the shades
Melt 'neath Diana's mellow grace.
Hark, how those deep, designing maids
