It's early, early, summer's advancing
But autumn soon comes a-dancing!

Glancing,
Dancing,
Backing and advancing,

Your trade is fast advancing;
You dance - but not for joy, because
You weep as you are dancing.

Then his eye wild ardors glancing,
From the choired gods advancing,

Yonder see I feasts entrancing,
But in my prophetic soul,
Hear I now the God advancing,

First, in green apparel dancing,
The young Spring smiled with angel grace;
Rosy summer next advancing,

Or sabres of fierce foes advancing?
Ah no! no more his proud steed prancing

As if he thought he were advancing,
It's prized more than my best dancing.

And--at my shadow glancing--
I feel a loss of strength,
As the Day of Life advancing

To see you rhythmically advancing
Seems to my fancy fond
As if it were a serpent dancing

Still, still advancing,
With banners glancing,

Vale of toil so waste and drear, hear him now advancing,
Playing on the golden strings, the midnight maiden’s boon;
Breaks the sunshine on the hills, the princess falls to dancing

Down the dimpled green-sward dancing
Bursts a flaxen-headed bevy,
Bud-lipt boys and girls advancing

To see his earnest eyes, with upward glancing,
Greet her known windows, even while yet advancing,--

Come, with airy step advancing,
Come, with blooming Hebe dancing;

How grand the sight when, with night advancing.
The stars seem touching your summits bold !
Nor less the joy when, your charms enhancing.

Fairy-like on earth advancing,
All transforming, all entrancing,

No flowers, no songs, no dancing, -
A tribe of red men, axe in hand, -
Behold the guests advancing!

Hither the affected city dame advancing,
Who sighs for operas, and dotes on dancing,

But the time is fast advancing;
From the heaven of its glancing
