And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!

But if, through all the livelong day,
You've cheered no heart, by yea or nay --

That's why I don't know what to do nor to say.
And so am I confounded as to how should I evade this ballyhoo
With no regret when I wake up early in the day.

Ay, but the foe sprung his mine many times, and it chanced on a day
Soon as the blast of that underground thunderclap echo ‘d away,

So dawn goes down to day
Nothing gold can stay.

Passion's birth, and infants' play,
Dove-like fondness, chaste concession,
