'I am long past wailing and whining-
I have wept too much in my life:
I've had twenty years of pining

As carrots or as turnips shining
Where the cold dawn light lies whining.

Sighing and whining,
Dying and pining,

And start your whelps a-whining,
Say 'In the greenwood of his soul
A lizard's eye was shining,

In you His loving light is shining;
All of you that is fine and true
Is part of Him, so quit your whining . . .

By their praying and whining,
And clasping and twining,

And windy gas lamps and the wet roads shining
And that old carol of the midnight whining,

Two vipers entwining.
Constantly whining.
